Artist Biography
Jorie Morgan is an artist who grew up in Vermont and currently lives and works in Western Massachusetts. In performance-based work, they have worked in collaboration with trombonist Tom Plsek, Croatian printmaker Boris Kajmak, lute player and singer Christopher Schaub, visual artist Whitney Robbins, and sound and video artist Jed Speare. Jorie has performed as a dancer nationally and internationally with the companies of Pooh Kaye, Paula Josa-Jones, Caitlin Corbett, Brian Crabtree, Snappy Dance Theater, and the Mobius Artists Group. Boston critics have cited their performance work as being in the top ten dance events in 1996 (Boston Globe), 1998 (Boston Globe), 1999 (Boston Phoenix), 2001 (Boston Herald and Bay Windows), 2002 (Boston Globe and Boston Phoenix), 2008 (Boston Phoenix) and 2009 (Boston Phoenix). Jorie is the recipient of the Louis Sudler Award and a Tanne Foundation Award (both for outstanding achievements in the arts). They have worked as a professor in Theater, Dance and Performance Art at The Boston Conservatory (1998 - 2013) and The School for the Museum of Fine Arts (1998 - 2004). Jorie has been invited to guest teach and conduct workshops at Harvard University, Salem State College, Emerson College, Earthdance, Charles River Creative Arts Program Snow Farm and Zea Mays Printmaking. Jorie’s work has been greatly inspired by the vocal training of members of the Roy Hart Theater, the choreographers Deborah Hay and Ralph Lemon, the composer John Cage, and visual artists Paul Cézanne, Helen Frankenthaler and Richard Diebenkorn.
A serious injury in 2011 eliminated their ability to dance and move in performance. After that point, they focused primarily on painting and printmaking. They have been a selected artist for the Northampton Biennial in 2015 and 2017; and had a print selected to be part of Stand Out Prints at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis, MN in 2018. They currently sing with the NCMC and Queer Joy Collective's Pride Chorus.
